Phoenix Amplification

Melding the classic sound of British low-watt crunch tones with two independently voiced preamps, the PlasticFace offers the unparalleled versatility and a large range of tones for the modern guitar player.

Two British EL84 tubes, for that sought after British low-wattage crunch, power the power amp section of the PlasticFace. The EL84’s provide a spunky sound full of character and raw distortion at a lower volume then you’d ever expect to hear them. At only 18 watt’s, power tube distortion can be comfortably reached at home, but with enough power to comfortably play a small gig or venue.

The EZ81 rectifier in the power section gives the amp it’s characteristic power sag, where the distortion.

The PlasticFace features a total of three 12AX7 tubes, controlling two independently voiced preamps that give the amp a wide range of classic crunch tones. The “Vintage Voiced” preamp is based on the design of the famous 18-Watt combos, and gives a lower gain crunch sound, and stunning cleans. The channel has controls for a volume, and a tone control, much like the original. Minimizing the circuitry between the input and the power section allows this channel to respond dramatically to volume changes on the guitar, allowing you to go from clean to crunch with the twist of a knob.

The “Plastic-face” preamp is a voiced recreation of the sounds of the famous Plexiglas panel amps of the 60’s. Used by many notable musicians, the 100W heads were the foundations for the classic rock n’ roll tone. The Channel features a semi-high gain preamp, and a full featured 3 Band EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble) to contour and sculpt the sound of the amp. The channel also features master and preamp volume controls to blend the natural character of the 18W power section with the preamp, allowing you to go from jazzy cleans to classic crunch.

The internals of the amp are totally hand-wired, and built to vintage specs, including the use of epoxy boards and turrets. Although this is very time consuming, this practice allows for a sturdy amp that doesn’t suffer from the problems of a printed circuit board amp.

All of the components in the amp are also chosen for optimal tone, and include carbon composition resistors for the signal path (read the FAQ), metal film resistors for the power stages, Mallory 150 series film caps, and genuine cloth covered wire just like the amps of yester-year.

Any amplifier built in the Plastic Face line comes with the option of coming with our vintage hand-wound recreation transformers (modeled after the original British counterparts), or with custom modern transformers designed to have a more open sound, and a higher power handling capability (extended life).

Along with these custom features, the PlasticFace line also features all of the standard Phoenix Amplification features found on all of our amps.
